We have invited Kristjan Jespersen to host our next oikos Academy guest lecture where he will share with us his insights into sustainability certifications, standards, and compliance within the coffee sector – and their origins in the palm oil sector.
Large-scale palm oil plantations are associated with deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, tenurial conflicts, and, most recently, labour and human rights. At the same time, initiatives like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) attempt to incentivise and certify responsible behaviours among palm oil producers.
The RSPO has been in operation for almost two decades and is the primary global consumer-facing sustainability certification organisation for palm oil. It has encountered a range of challenges in its history, leading to several significant instances of attempted or successful adaptation of fundamental rules in the name of continuing the standard’s overall project.
These developments were so transformational that they inspired and influenced the development of the Rainforest Alliance Certification - the governing certification that oversees a large percentage of sustainable coffee production.
The lecture will explore the recent developments of Rainforest Alliance Certification and explore whether there remain gaps in the certification.
Kristjan Jespersen is an Associate Professor at Copenhagen Business School and coordinator of the CBS Impact for Innovation Lab. As a primary area of focus, he studies the growing development and management of Ecosystem Services in developing countries. Within the field, Kristjan focuses his attention on the institutional legitimacy of such initiatives and the overall compensation tools used to ensure compliance.

Programme
Best Practice Supply Chains:
In our globalized world, where the majority of businesses' material sourcing programs span vast distances across the world, it has become commonplace to implement supplier Codes of Conduct. But what does this mean for accountability? How can companies ensure that their suppliers are committed to ethically and environmentally sustainable practices?
Pandora, the contemporary, high-quality, danish jewellery company, is a good example of how companies can aim to ensure responsibility from their suppliers and hold their suppliers (and themselves) accountable. Pandora's commitment to transparency and accountability is evident through their Responsible Supplier Programme, continued use of recycled materials and attention toward human and workers’ rights.

Welcome back to another edition of oikos Academy!
The end of 2015 was marked by the COP21 conference, which optimists believe could’ve been the tipping point towards a more sustainable development of our planet. As of today, however, major industries and societies are still deeply unsustainable in their operations and cultures. We are in great need for groundbreaking innovative solutions to avoid reality falling short of our visions.
This is why oikos Academy Spring 2016 is dedicated to showcase successful organizations which disrupt their sectors onto a more sustainable pathway – through fundamentally new approaches. You will be able to learn what drove them to develop these approaches, how they are radically chaning the business as usual and what are the key success factors to staying viable in the long run. Certainly, there have also been roadblocks, doubts and disappointments along the way, hence you can expect an intriguing and insightful series this semester!
We again feature a diverse set of speakers, coming from major, well-established industries such as energy and finance but also startups in children’s wear, digital B2B collaboration and bio based material design. They are complemented by an introduction from a CBS lecturer on sustainable innovation strategies and a policymaking perspective from the Nordic Council of Ministers.

As citizens of Copenhagen, you’re living in a city that brands itself a forerunner in sustainability, but how does it live up to these claims and what is actually being done to enhance the people’s lives?
During our five events, you will not only hear from leading experts on their daily efforts and challenges to make Copenhagen a greener, more livable place, but also be able to contribute with your own experiences and ideas from a citizen’s perspective, by asking questions and taking part in our interactive workshop.
Cities are by nature complex, diverse and dynamic – hence we made sure to cover the topic of Urban Sustainability in Copenhagen in a multi-faceted fashion. Our lectures will touch upon various interesting aspects such as the City of Copenhagen’s plan to become carbon neutral by 2025, how it mobilizes entrepreneurs to help reach this goal, how design and culture can encourage sustainable behavior, what role green technology plays to disrupt urban lifestyles and how Copenhagen really performs in urban sustainability on an international level.

In the spring of 2015, oikos Copenhagen will in collaboration with Danish Business Authority, host “oikos Academy – Spring 2015, Sustainable Business Models”. The speakers will as usual consist of people with hands-on experience and people from the academic world.
oikos Copenhagen and Danish Business Authority are hosting this event, because we see a tendency that corporate decision makers are increasingly under pressure to meet investors' expectations of improved financial performance and the demands of other stakeholders focused on nonfinancial—environmental, social, and governance (ESG)—issues. To serve both audiences, business leaders need strategies that incorporate and align multiple dimensions of performance.
oikos Academy Spring 2015, Sustainable Business Models explores how to use sustainable business
models to improve ESG performance in ways that drive long-term profitability for the business.
